Radio for Peacebuilding Africa Awards

The RFPA Awards was created to recognise the most original and highest quality radio programmes that contribute to promoting peace and tolerance on the African continent. The RFPA Awards intend to showcase and reward radio programmes that by the topics presented or the angle used intend to reduce tension between different groups and communities; highlight and enhance the value of shared interests; break down stereotypes; or provide positive role models and agents for change.

Kigali, 19th November 2013: Search for Common Ground, an international non-governmental organisation,  recognized today for the fourth time African journalists for their high quality radio programmes that contributed to promoting peace and tolerance on the Africa continent.  The Awards Ceremony were hosted in Kigali, Rwanda at the Umubano Hotel on November 19, 2013. The Ceremony brings together the three award-winning journalists, who are coming from Burundi, Ghana, and South Africa. The competition, which was open to all radio journalists in Africa, was organised as part of Search for Common Ground’s Radio for Peacebuilding Africa Project (RFPA). This project aims to strengthen the professionalisation of African media practitioners to provide accurate, credible, balanced and useful information to the populations.

For this edition of the RFPA Awards, three categories were awarded: Youth, Gender, and the Jury’s Special Award.

2012

RFPA is pleased to announce the results of the 2012 RFPA Awards!

RFPA received a diverse selection of programmes in the entries, including both fictional and non-fictional programmes; English, French, and local language broadcasts; and representation from countries across the continent.

The RFPA awards were presented on October 18th at a special ceremony in Kigali.

For this edition of the RFPA Awards, the three award categories were:

  • Youth
  • Gender
  • Jury’s Special Award

A prize was given to the top three entries for each category, recognising high quality radio programmes that contribute to peace in Africa. The jury members were media and peacebuilding experts from sub-Saharan Africa, as well as from Europe and the United States.

2011

Radio for Peacebuilding Africa Awards - Official Results!

On Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011, the winners of the 2011 RFPA Awards were honoured at a ceremony organised by Search for Common Ground in Kigali, Rwanda.

Approximately 40 persons, including journalists from the Great Lakes region, representatives of civil society organisations, and Rwandan government officials, attended the Ceremony during which Ms Rebecca Besant, the Director of SFCG in Rwanda, awarded Eunice Maina from Well Told Story in Nairobi, Kenya and Ojok Emmanuel from Radio Pacis in Arua, Uganda, respectively winners of the 2011 Youth Award and Jury’s Special Award. Sheriff Bojang Junior, winner of the Gender Award, was also honoured although he was unable to participate in person. “RFPA seeks to create a peer network among African journalists working for peace and development. We are delighted to honour these journalists for their efforts and hope to encourage Rwandan Journalists to participate in this network as well,” said Ms Besant. The ceremony ended with a speech from Mr. Serge Guillaume, Adviser to the Rwandan Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, who congratulated the winners and insisted on the role that journalists must play in their societies. He also highlighted the importance of ICTs as a tool for journalists.
