Tuyage Facsheet

In Burundi, Search is implementing the Tuyage: Information Access and Economic Discourse Strengthening project funded by USAID in collaboration with Freedom House. Tuyage aims to foster an enriched information landscape and culture of open discussion on concerns that directly affect Burundians in their daily lives. It focuses on shared economics concerns and opportunities as a means of expanding civic engagement, increasing dialogue across divides, and building social cohesion.

Tuyage Gender Barrier Analysis

In January 2021, Search conducted a study to shed light on the existing cultural barriers to women’s economic empowerment (WEE), the social norms that limit or support women’s access to economic opportunities.

Analysis of Cultural Barriers to Women’s Economic Empowerment in Burundi

Since July 2018, Search for Common Ground (Search) has been implementing “Tuyage: Information Access and Economic Discourse Strengthening project” in Burundi. The project is funded by USAID for a 5 years period, and the overall objective of the project is to foster an enriched information landscape and culture of open discussion on economic concerns and civic engagement that directly affect Burundians in their daily lives, increasing dialogue across divides and building social cohesion.

As part of this project, a study was conducted between December 2020 and January 2021 to shed light on the existing cultural barriers to women’s economic empowerment (WEE), the social norms that limit or support women’s access to economic opportunities.

Gender Barrier Analysis – Tuyage – February 2021

Within the framework of the USAID-funded project “Tuyage (“Let’s Talk”): Information Access and Economic Discourse Strengthening”, Search conducted a Gender Barrier Analysis to increase the understanding of existing cultural barriers to women’s economic empowerment (WEE), provide a better understanding of the social norms that limit women’s access to economic opportunities and identify social norms that facilitate WEE in Burundi. Data collection consisted of large-scale surveys, qualitative interviews of local actors, and focus group discussions with women and men of different age groups from rural and urban communes of Burundi.

This study highlighted that patriarchy remains the norm in the Burundian society and does leave little room for both men or women to consider women as autonomous individuals who can make decisions on their own or for their own development. However, respondents from (i) urban areas and (ii) who went/go to university tend to favour gender equality. Conversely, neither gender or age seem to affect representation of women in society: women and men of all ages seem to maintain the patriarchal representation of women. The increase in access to education is leading to a generation that will be more educated. Laws and policies that are being issued in recent years are ensuring women can find a place in all sectors and find avenues for increased access and active participation in economic activities.

Recommendations:

  • Individual and substantial economic supporting activities for women
  • Nuanced strategy for urban vs. rural context
  • Sensitisation and awareness activities for general population (concept of positive masculinity)

Great Lakes Region Media Programming

Search is a recognized pioneer in working with actors at all levels to use media to promote peace and stability in conflict-affected communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda.

The crisis that engulfed the Great Lakes Region twenty five years ago led to the greatest human tragedy. The genocide in Rwanda, civil war in Burundi, and ongoing violent conflicts in the DRC have led to the deaths of millions of ordinary people, a humanitarian catastrophe, and one of the world’s largest deployment of UN Peacekeepers. Search has been working with local institutions to build regional consciousness, connections and capacities, with a
particular focus on university-age youth – the next generation of political and journalists.
